I was listening to the audio book called “The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference” by Malcolm Gladwell that explains how major trends get started. He was talking about this skater sneaker company called Airwalk. It turns out that Airwalk’s advertising company Lambesis was able to take an ultra-hip strange shoe to the mainstream. They did it with a bunch of funny award-winning commercials in the 1990s.
DeeDee Gordon of Lambesis, the lady behind the commercials, had previously worked for the Converse athletic shoe company. She knew how to spot trends and would sit for hours on street corners watching what kids were wearing and talking about. She would take the ideas and music that the cool kids were into and work them in a funny way into the commercials. For instance, the videos below incorporate alien abduction and ska music.
When I heard about this I had to track down these videos to check them out…
Opps, I was abducted by aliens and they took my sneakers
