Once a blog is getting traffic either through linkbacks or search engine results, then a blogger can earn some money.  The easiest way to do that is to place some type of automated ad providor on the site such as Google Adsense.

Another major revolution in blogging was the innovation of Pay-Per-Post started by PayPerPost.com.  The site is a brokerage for allowing advertisers to connect with bloggers and pay them for writing about their products.

Another way that bloggers have started to earn money is by taking all their blog posts and making a book out of them.  This has been nicknamed a ‘blook’.  A blogger named Tucker Max even got on the bestseller list in the New York Times!
